Educational Programs

Our educational offerings include guided tours for school groups and a Docent training program that prepares volunteers to share the site’s complex history with visitors. The Friends also organize annual field trips for members, and both members and guests can participate in workshops and programs offered at either site when available.
K-12 school groups visit the sites for tours on Wednesdays through Fridays throughout the year. For adults, those who join our Docents Program learn history of the site and middle Rio Grande area.
Between 2018 and 2025 undergrad and graduate students, whose research focused on central New Mexico, received grants to support their work. Summaries are available for each grant.
School Groups

We all learn differently. For many students, hands-on, tactile methods are a great way to absorb and understand history, including New Mexico history, in an impactful way.
Less than 15 miles from most Albuquerque schools, Coronado Historic Site offers docent tours led by Friends Volunteers throughout the school year, on Wednesdays through Fridays. Tours are not offered from December through February due to temperatures.
School groups are capped at no more than 50 students and consist of a 75 to 90 minute tour of the Coronado Historic Site. School Group Tours can be requested by calling Coronado Historic Site at 505-867-5351.

If you are interested in becoming a Docent, please reach out to the Regional Manager of Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites to discuss what is involved and Docent time availability.
