Mounds or fields covered with
grass and rocks. These are the features
that intrigue archaeologists.
They are ready to discover the mysteries

below ground.  One doesn’t start by digging in,

there is a time-consuming process that

archaeologists follow.

A field trip to a pueblo near Ponderosa, in the Jemez mountains, will provide us with a two-
fold experience. After driving to the site, a Forest Ranger/archaeologist will briefly go over the

high points of field work: Obtain funding and permit, surveying, measuring, site grid, mapping
trenching, pick, shovel and then trowel and it doesn’t end there. At this point we move on to a
walk and talk at Big and Little Pueblo which had a kiva in the middle of the two pueblos.

Activities and Events
Coronado & Jemez Historic Sites

An amazing variety of events are available, organized by both The Friends of Coronado & Jemez Historic Sites and the NM Historic Sites who manage both the Coronado and Jemez locations and others throughout the state.

The Friends’ events can be for members only or for public enjoyment.  Members-only events include field daytrips to special NM locations and a themed 3 to 5-day excursion to one or more NM historic locations each year.  Our events for everyone include our monthly lectures and a major native arts event each Fall.

NM Historic Sites plans interesting and enjoyable monthly events at both the Coronado and Jemez sites as well as special events at each site for both adults and children.
